How fit do I need to be to do this trek?

Choquequirao Trek is a Grade B or a moderately difficult trekking route. So any fit person can do this trek, even if you do not have any previous experience. You should be aware of what to expect and mentally prepare for it. Then, as long as you will to, you can.

What about battery charging and hot shower facilities?

Yes, you can charge batteries in the lodges. Charger should be brought. There are hot shower facilities as well. Also, hot water facility is 5 soles.

What about internet access?

Yes. Internet can be accessed in most places. Sometimes, there might be some technical problems. Internet in Route is not as fast as you are used to and at times you can just lose connection.

Are there ATMs on the way to Choquequirao trek?

No. There are no ATMs on this trek route. You will have to draw enough cash in Cusco city. Everything is paid in cash soles. So money should be exchanged before the start of the trek.

Choquequirao Trekking

The Choquequirao Trek 4 Days is one of the most popular alternative treks in Cusco. Although this four-day classic route does not take you to Machu Picchu, it has gained a lot of popularity among travelers in South America.

Choquequirao, Peru, was built in the same era as Machu Picchu, also by the Inca Emperor Pachacuti. Both cities share similar architecture and are known as the “Sacred Sister Cities”.

The name Choquequirao comes from Quechua and means “Cradle of Gold”. It sits atop a hill at 3,033 meters above sea level (9,951 feet).

When the Spanish invaded Peru, the Incas abandoned the complex and moved into the jungle. Due to its remote location, high up in the Quriwayrachina mountain range, the Spanish were unable to conquer it.

Over time, the entire site became covered by thick jungle vegetation. Its existence remained unknown until 1710, when Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz discovered it while resting his mules after a prospecting expedition.

However, it was in the 1970s that local authorities began excavations. In fact, to this day, only one-third of the complex has been excavated and is open to visitors. Even today, when you visit Choquequirao, you may feel like you are the first to discover it.

STARTING POINT: Pick-up from hotel/Airbnb in Cusco between 5:00 am.
ENDING POINT: Return to Cusco with drop-off at your hotel/Airbnb at 5:00 pm.
HIKING DISTANCE: 44 km / 27.34 miles.
PHYSICAL LEVEL: Level 3. The Choquequirao Trek requires some physical preparation. We also recommend acclimatizing for at least 2 days before starting the trek.
MAXIMUM ALTITUDE: 3,030 meters (9,951 feet).
TRANSPORTATION: Private van/bus to the Capuliyoq trailhead (for our passengers and staff). Return by bus to Cusco.
ACCOMMODATION: 03 nights in a basic lodge
PORTERING/MULE SERVICE OPTIONAL: 7 kilos / 14 pounds of extra porter service optional. A duffel bag will be provided for your personal belongings (this will be carried by porters or horses).
MEALS: 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 3 dinners, 3 tea times + wake-up teas. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options available at no extra cost (upon request).

Day 01 :

Cusco – Capuliyoc – Chiquisca (3350 – 2850 – 1930m)

Your epic journey kicks off at 8:00 AM after your breakfast when we pick you up from your accommodation in Cusco and set off on a four hours scenic drive to Capuliyoc in our private transport. Along the way, you’ll be mesmerized by breathtaking views of the snow-capped Salkantay and Humantay mountains, an awe-inspiring start to your adventure.

We make a stop in Curahuasi for take the lunch then continue to Capuliyoc the entrance to choquequirao trek.

We’ll begin our trekking adventure, descending through the stunning landscapes of Apurímac Canyon on a three-hour downhill hike. Along the way, you’ll catch sight of two towering peaks, Padreyoc and Qoriwayrachina, before arriving at Chiquisca, our lunch spot, where you’ll savor a delicious meal in the heart of nature.

Day 02 :

Chiquisca – Playa Rosalina - Marampata – Choquequirao (1930 – 1550 – 2850 – 3033m).

Wakeup early in the morning 5:00 am

After having enjoyed our breakfast, we begin to descend for another hour and fifteen minutes to the bottom of the Canyon to Rosalina Beach (1500m). From there we begin the ascent out of the canyon as soon as we can, in a warm climate to the town of Marampata (2850m), where we will have our cabin with a beautiful view of the archaeological complex of Choquequirao.

Day 03 :

Choquequirao – Marampata – Playa Rosalina – Chiquisca (3033 – 2850 – 1550 - 1930m).

Early in the morning after breakfast we will watch the sunrise over the archaeological complex of Choquequirao, accompanied by a professional guide we will make a presentation concerning the history, ruins and recent excavations found.

Currently Choquequirao “Cradle of Gold” keeps many ancestral secrets, because at the moment only 30% of the ruins are restored. There is a project that is in charge of the restoration and it is speculated that in a few more years Choquequirao will be presented to the world in its entirety; that perhaps it will be a great attraction surpassing Machu Picchu itself.

After the visit to Choquequirao we find ourselves again in Marampata for lunch continue down the mountain to the Apurimac canyon (Playa Rosalina 1500m), to then continue ascending to the forest of our lodge at Chiquisca (1930m) where we pass the night.

Day 04 :

Chiquisca – Paso Capuliyoq - Cusco (1930 – 2850 – 2800 - 3350m)

Wake up early In the morning 5:00 am , we have a climb, in the middle of a dry scenery during the day and the temperature rises according to the sun setting on our path. Capuliyoq (2850m), is the place where we will take our breakfast a short rest and our bus to Cusco observing the majestic Apurimac canyon and sometimes it is ideal to observe the flight of the Condor.

From the Capuliyoq pass the level of the route is calmer to enjoy an excellent view of the mountains and snow-capped peaks that are at the top of the mountain range. In the town of Cachora they await us with the best expectations of having returned from one of the best excursions in the Vilcabamba mountain range. Then we have a transport that will take us back to the city of Cusco.

Finally, we’ll arrive in Cusco around 5:00 p.m., where we’ll drop you off directly at your accommodation, allowing you to rest and recharge after this extraordinary experience.
